Australian Peanut Butter Review and My Recommendations

Australian Peanut Butter Review and My Recommendations

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This blog post is written in conjunction with my Youtube video on peanut butter shopping, just in case you haven’t watched it yet. In the video, I reviewed all of the peanut butters available in Coles and Woolworths and gave my shopping recommendations. I personally am a big fan of peanut butter. It is a great food deserving a spot in your healthy pantry. Why? Please find out here.

Since it’s always hard to remember everything after watching a video, I’m going to summarise all the key points from the video here for your ease of reference.

I’ve sorted all 17 of the crunchy peanut butters into four categories – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. You may be thinking, why just crunchy and not also smooth? Well the nutritional profile of crunchy and smooth peanut butters are actually very similar, so if I give one crunchy peanut butter the rating of Silver, then the smooth version would also be Silver.

Let’s start with our first category, Bronze. I don’t recommend any product from the bronze category as they contain one or more of the concerning ingredients listed in the photo. This category includes the following peanut butter products:

  • Coles Crunchy/Smooth Peanut Butter
  • Farmers Co. Australian Peanuts Crunchy/Smooth Ozenuts Peanut Butter
  • Beqa Light Peanut Spread Crunchy/Smooth
  • Woolworths Essentials Crunchy/Smooth Peanut Butter
  • Coles Crunchy/Smooth Peanut Butter Source of Protein
  • Sanitarium Crunchy/Smooth Peanut Butter
  • Beqa Peanut Butter Crunchy/Smooth

The next category is Silver. Neither of these peanut butters contain any added sugar or salt. These are:

  • Beqa No Added Sugar or Salt Peanut Butter Crunchy/Smooth
  • Sanitarium No Added Sugar or Salt Peanut Butter Crunchy/Smooth

However, if you are concerned about food additives, which they do contain, there are other better options without additives such as those in the Gold and Platinum category.

The Gold category is one that comes with an Eat Savvi Approval – that means we would recommend them as a pantry item. These peanut butters contain only pure peanut butter with a tiny amount of salt. If they are left on the shelf for a long time, the natural oils from the peanuts do tend to separate from the solid part, but you just need to give them a good stir before eating them. This category includes the following peanut butters:

Woolworths 100% Nuts Natural Peanut Butter Crunchy/SmoothWoolworths
Coles Organic Crunchy/Smooth Peanut butter Coles
Mayver’s Crunchy/Smooth Peanut ButterColes & Woolworths
Purely Nutz Crunchy Chunks/Smooth Peanut ButterColes
Macro Organic Crunchy/Smooth Peanut ButterWoolworths
Sanitarium Natural 100% Peanuts Crunchy/Smooth Peanut ButterColes & Woolworths

The last category is Platinum, our highest rating, which also comes with an Eat Savvi Approval – products in this category are our top recommendations. These peanut butters offer even more health benefits compared with those in the Gold category, as these two options are very high in monounsaturated fat, especially Hi Oleic Monounsaturated Fat in Pic’s Peanut Butter

This category includes the following peanut butters:

Beqa Simply Nuts The Crunchiest/Crunchy/SmoothColes & Woolworths
Pic’s Peanut Butter Crunchy/SmoothColes & Woolworths

I hope this article has enough information for you so that next time you’re out shopping, you can feel equipped and empowered with all the knowledge you need to pick the right peanut butter for you. Let’s shop savvy and Eat Savvi!
